Hawaii has much tougher travel requirements than any other state to keep its native animals rabies free. In order to avoid quarantine for your pets, Hawaii’s regulations must be strictly adhered to. For international travel, import requirements vary widely. The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) website allows for you to see import requirements for your destination country by simply selecting it from a drop-down menu. It is your responsibility to ensure that all requirements for your destination country/Hawaii are met to minimize any problems during travel. It is recommended that your pet be on current flea and heartworm preventative during travel. Several parts of the US and many parts of the world have a high incidence of heartworm disease; your pet can acquire these heart parasites from a mosquito bite leading to severe complications or death.
